🖋️ The Midnight Boheme Guide to Bold and Beautiful Print Layouts
Design That Speaks Louder Than Words

If fonts are your voice and color is your mood, layout is your stage. It’s the difference between a cluttered flyer that gets tossed and a beautifully balanced design that gets framed, pinned, or shared.
At Midnight Boheme, we don’t just design for print—we design for impact. And whether it's a sultry show poster, an elegant menu, or a cheeky postcard, the layout is where your message comes to life.
Here’s our go-to guide for creating bold, beautiful, and unforgettable print layouts.

📏 1. Think in Grids—Then Break Them (On Purpose)
A good layout starts with structure. Grids create visual rhythm and harmony. They tell the eye where to go and what to focus on. But the secret sauce? Knowing when to break the grid.
Start with:
Columns for body copy
Margins and gutters to give breathing room
Visual balance of text and image
Then:→ Tilt that headline.→ Oversize a number.→ Let one image bleed edge to edge.
🎭 Drama belongs in your layout. Use it wisely.

🎨 2. Create Hierarchy with Intention
Not everything deserves to shout. Some things whisper. Some guide. Some wow.

Your layout should make it immediately clear:
What do you want them to read first?
What do you want them to feel?
What should they remember after one glance?
Use:
Size variation
Weight (bold vs light)
Contrast (light/dark, color use)
Spacing (give headlines room to breathe)
The best layouts lead the eye like a tour guide with perfect timing.

✍️ 3. Make Typography the Star
At Midnight Boheme, we don’t pick fonts—we cast characters.
Your type should:
Reflect your brand voice
Add flair or sophistication
Pair with supporting fonts that complement (not compete)
Our favorite tips:
Limit yourself to 2–3 typefaces per project
Mix serif with sans for contrast
Let one word go big—really big
Use tracking and line height to keep copy clean and legible
A layout is only as powerful as the words you highlight.

🌈 4. Use Color Strategically
Color isn't just decoration—it's a design decision. It directs attention, sets tone, and helps organize information.
Pro techniques:
Use bold color blocks to section off content
Let one pop color guide the eye across the page
Keep backgrounds clean so content stands out
Consider how color translates in print (CMYK over RGB!)
Bold doesn’t have to mean busy. Sometimes one strong hue says more than a rainbow.

📸 5. Balance Text and Imagery
If your poster looks like a novel, it’s too much. If it’s all photos, it’s missing story.
Strike the balance:
Use high-res, brand-aligned images
Let photography “anchor” a design section
Keep copy short, punchy, and styled for skimming
And don’t forget white space. White space is not empty—it’s elegant. It creates breathing room and makes everything look more refined.

💌 6. Design for the Medium
A social media post isn’t a postcard. A menu isn’t a magazine. Consider:
Where it will be seen (outdoors? coffee table?)
How it will be held or handled
What you want the reader to do (scan, admire, save, shop?)
Let the form inform your layout choices—always.
